In brief

  • It is a national competition for students of carpentry, joinery and shopfitting, with prizes of up to £500.
  • Colleges can enter students, and students can register themselves.
  • The closing date for entries is 31 March 2027.

The Institute of Carpenters, based in Wendover, Buckinghamshire, opened applications for the 2026 to 2027 Carpenters' Craft Competition on 28 September. The Institute describes it as a national competition for students of carpentry, joinery and shopfitting, judged by leaders in the field, that sets out to reward students who go the extra mile to reach the highest standards.

How it works

  • Prizes of up to £500 are available.
  • There are rounds at regional and national level.
  • The Institute says students from more than 200 colleges are eligible.
  • Colleges wanting to enter students, and students wanting to be considered, register through the Institute's event page, where the candidate pack and competition documents are posted.
  • Entries close on 31 March 2027.

For a workshop that takes on apprentices, the competition is a way to put a student's best work in front of judges from outside the college. Tutors and employers can find the registration link on the Institute's competition page, or contact the Institute at info@instituteofcarpenters.com.
